USPTO 21st Century Strategic Plan

I re-read the USPTO 21’st Century Strategic Plan last night. I was reminded of the amazing efforts underway to revolutionize the Patent Office and the patent examination process. The Plan also reminds me of the admirable goals and purpose behind these efforts.

The USPTO Mission is a concise reflection of these goals and purpose:

“…to ensure that the intellectual property system contributes to a strong global economy, encourages investment in innovation, and fosters entrepreneurial spirit.”

The Strategic Plan outlines several initiatives underway at the Patent Office, and gives specific examples of changes that the Office believes necessary to allow it to achieve its mission. Its a good read, and an easy way to remind yourself of what’s coming in the near future.

Of course, the Strategic Plan is heavily dependent on enactment of the United States Patent and Trademark Fee Modernization Act (H.R. 1561). Unfortunately, this bill is currently stalled in Congress.
