Where is the official Dudas resignation letter?

As the Obama administration prepares to take over, it seems a bit odd that we haven’t seen any official indication that Jon Dudas has submitted his resignation. We have the PatentlyO report of the internal email to employees, but have yet to see or hear of a letter of resignation. At the time of writing this post – Saturday afternoon before the Tuesday inauguration – the USPTO site has no mention of a change in leadership.

It’s not entirely clear what protocol or tradition requires here, but at least one agency head appears to have submitted an official letter of resignation on the heels of such an ‘internal email’ to agency employees. This AP report indicates that CDC head Dr. Julie Gerberding recently submmited hers as part of the Obama transition:

“As part of the transition process, the Administration requested resignation letters from a number of senior-level officials, including Dr. Julie Gerberding. This week, the Administration accepted Dr. Gerberding’s resignation, effective January 20,” CDC spokesman Glen Nowak said in a prepared statement.

This has me wondering if we’ll see an official report of Dudas leaving office. Is it possible the transition will happen unceremoniously? Or, is it possible that the Obama administration never requested a resignation letter from Dudas?

Observe that the IAM blog reported — Note – I got the following clarification from the Office of Public Affairs at the USPTO last night about the resignation: “The Patently-O item about Jon was actually a bit misleading. Jon is going to be here through the end of the administration (Jan. 20). Jan. 12 is actually a day we’ve arranged for a reception for employees to say farewell to him prior to his departure, but he is not leaving on that day.” –and that the USPTO is closed on 19 and 20 Jan. 09.

    Lawrence -
    Thanks for the comment.
I’m still waiting for an official indication that Director Dudas has left the Office. The absence of an official announcement to Office stakeholders, while not surprising, is a bit disconcerting.
The blog post you reference is available somewhere on this site. Unfortunately, IAM requires registration before allowing readers to access their full posts.
